Discovery Route
Exploring Our Heritage

Discover the many treasures of authentique Haute-Provence along routes that trace the footsteps of its rich history—shaped by its remarkable sites and the generations who called it home.

This region invites you to slow down, wander through the picturesque streets of its hilltop villages, explore its Provençal landscapes, savor its specialties, and visit iconic sites.

Your Journey

stop 1

Begin in Simiane-la-Rotonde to discover one of the region’s most captivating villages. This picturesque village with its traditional cobblestone streets (calades) is crowned by a medieval castle featuring its iconic rotunda.

As you wander through its narrow streets, you’ll encounter medieval heritage at every turn: houses dating from the Middle Ages, a covered market hall offering a splendid panorama of the surroundings, and the Saint-Jean bell tower (unusual for having no adjoining church).

Visit the Château de la Rotonde (allow about 1 hour) to discover the rich history of this site, which has undergone numerous transformations over the centuries.

Your next stop is the Abbaye de Valsaintes and its gardens, particularly stunning during the rose season in late May to early June, when over 550 different rose species delight visitors. The magnificent architecture of the abbey will captivate history lovers, while the building’s interior simplicity invites quiet contemplation. Numerous events are offered to visitors throughout the year.

stop 2

Your second stop is Banon, a village famous for its namesake goat’s milk cheese. Take time to explore old Banon on a stroll up to the Upper Church, which often hosts exhibitions or concerts.

Don’t miss the Fromagerie de Banon in the heart of the village for a tasting that will delight your palate. Next, visit the magnificent Librairie du Bleuet, a must-visit for book lovers.

End your day on a sweet note at the Confiserie Leblanc, where you’ll discover a thousand and one sweet and savory delights.

For adventure seekers, discover the Banon landscapes from the air with Jok’Air, which offers tandem paragliding flights or solo experiences.

stop 3

Your third stop brings you to Saint-Michel-l’Observatoire / Lincel, where you’ll explore the world of astronomy. You can start your morning with a guided tour of the village with the Association des Amis de Saint-Michel / Lincel (approximately 1.5-2 hours). You’ll explore the streets of Saint-Michel, discovering its history and monuments: Saint-Pierre Church, Upper Church, Place des Insurgés, Maison de Taos Amrouche, and more.

Next, tour the Observatoire de Haute-Provence, site of the world’s first extrasolar planet discovery in 1995. You’ll visit the large dome housing the 1.93-meter telescope, learn about the Observatory’s research, and explore two educational trails.

Finally, visit the Centre d’Astronomie, where you can enjoy a Planetarium show that takes you on a journey through the universe and its secrets. Then, continue your stargazing adventure with a discovery evening for live observation using various instruments, led by science guides.

stop 4

Set out to discover Mane and its treasures. First, a stroll through the old village streets will lead you to historic monuments revealing the region’s rich heritage.

Then, head to the Prieuré de Salagon to visit the museum and its gardens. You can also plan a picnic to enjoy the setting of this remarkable site with 2,000 years of history.

On your way to the Château de Sauvan, stop to admire the Roman Bridge adjacent to the hotel of the same name. This was a crossing point for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago (Way of Saint James).

Finally, visit the Château de Sauvan, also called the “Little Trianon of Provence,” where history enthusiasts can discover this majestic estate and its French-style gardens.

stop 5

Continue your journey in Dauphin, one of four villages in our region designated “Villages et cités de caractère”. This hilltop village will charm you with its remarkable panorama and rich history.

The commune is crossed by the ancient Via Domitia, which linked Spain to Italy, and remnants are still visible today.

Then, in neighboring Saint-Maime, the Musée de la Mémoire Ouvrière, Mines et Mineurs de Provence (Museum of Working Memory, Mines and Miners of Provence) will immerse you in the region’s mining past, tracing the history of mines from the 19th century to the mid-20th century.

stop 6

In Vachères, visit the Musée Pierre Martel, a museum of paleontology, prehistory, and archaeology. You’ll discover the region’s history through the centuries.

Next, visit the beautifully renovated former Saint-Christophe Church for views of the surroundings. It also serves as a venue for numerous exhibitions.

Your afternoon continues in Revest-des-Brousses. On the agenda: a village stroll, with the option of a treasure hunt starting from the town hall following “the traces of water.”

Then, visit the Château du Villard, dating from the 15th century and completely restored between 2020 and 2024.

stop 7

Your final stop is Reillanne, a magnificent hilltop village with remarkable heritage. Several walking trails are available both within the village and in the surrounding areas.

On Sunday mornings, a traditional market is held on Place de la Libération, delighting all your senses and taste buds.

A few kilometers away lies the village of Montjustin, which will enchant you with its picturesque character. A village stroll will reveal its treasures and secrets. Stop by the village cemetery, where you’ll find the grave of Henri Cartier-Bresson (famous French photographer).
