At the foot of the Vachères plateau lies the commune of Sainte-Croix-à-Lauze, a tiny Provençal village in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Located north of Reillanne and Viens, it sits along the GR4 trail amid numerous hiking paths.
The village first appeared in records in the 11th century under the name Sancta Crux in valle Relliana Salleta. It was during this period that the Viscounts of Reillanne took possession of it.
Sainte-Croix-à-Lauze offers a welcome stopover between hiking circuits. Peaceful and welcoming, it features several centuries-old stone houses built with flat slabs, following the architectural traditions of Provence.
what to see
The Castle
Set in the heart of the village of Sainte-Croix-à-Lauze stands the majestic 17th-century castle.
A wrought-iron gate, adorned with the armorial shield of the Roux de Sainte-Croix family, welcomes visitors.
The Parish Church
The parish church is a true heritage gem. Dating from the 18th century, the church reflects the village’s ancient history, with its existence documented as early as 1043. The bell tower may date back to the 11th century and dominates the surrounding landscape.
Outside the church, two limestone plaques decorated with interlacing patterns, likely from the Carolingian period, draw attention with their timeless elegance.
The Cemetery Chapel
Emerging from the depths of history, the cemetery chapel, dedicated to Saint Didier, was unearthed from rubble and vegetation in the 1980s.
Consigned to silence and oblivion since the mid-18th century, this work of sacred architecture finally saw the light of day again, revealing its origins dating from the 11th century, when it was under the care of the Carluc priory.
